Overview
Go from "how did they make that?" to "I made this" in 8 weeks.
You have danced to it at festivals. Put it on for a workout. Built nights out, road trips and some of your favorite memories around it. Now learn what goes into actually making it. This is an 8-week creative experience for adults who love electronic music and want to explore a completely new side of it. Alongside Jake, you learn how EDM tracks are built, experiment with beats, basslines, synths, melodies, drops and effects, and use those same building blocks to produce an original track of your own. You do not need to arrive knowing what a producer does, you do not need to know the software, and you do not even need to know what kind of track you want to make yet. The majority of every 60-minute class is spent producing on a workstation with an instructor over your shoulder, not watching a lecture.

Over eight weeks Jake helps you hear EDM through a completely different lens, understand the ingredients behind the music you already love, and start using those same ideas yourself. By the end of the course you will have produced an original EDM track of your own, and you will never hear your favorite tracks quite the same way again.

WEEK-BY-WEEK CURRICULUM
From the kick
to the master.
Every 60-minute class runs the same way: a short demo of the new technique, then 35 to 40 minutes producing on your own track with instructor coaching, capped by a listen back where the group hears what you built that week. That hands-on block is where it clicks.
- Weeks 1-2: The DAW, project setup, tempo, key and locking in your track idea
- Week 3: Drum programming, groove, swing and building a pattern that moves
- Weeks 4-5: Basslines, chord work and synth sound design from the raw oscillator
- Week 6: Arrangement, the intro, the build, the drop and the outro
- Weeks 7-8: Mixing, mastering and the student listening session

You do not start with abstract production theory. You start with music. Throughout the course you listen closely to EDM tracks, explore what makes them work, and begin identifying the choices happening underneath what you hear. Then, instead of just talking about those ideas, you try them yourself, because one of the most exciting ways to learn how music works is to finally get inside it.

EDM Production Course FAQs
No. This course is built for complete beginners. We start with the DAW itself, so you do not need production experience, music theory, or any gear of your own to keep up.
Ableton Live, which is the standard for electronic music and for performing it live. The concepts transfer to any DAW, so if you already work in Logic Pro or FL Studio you can keep using it and your instructor will follow along.
No. We provide the workstations, the software, the monitors and the headphones at our Downtown Boston studio. Having a laptop with a DAW installed helps you keep working between classes, but it is optional.
Yes. You commit to a track idea in Week 1 and add a new layer every week, so by Week 8 you are mixing and mastering something you have been building the whole time. The course ends with a student listening session where the group hears your finished track.
House, techno, bass music, future beats and everything adjacent. You choose the direction of your own track and your instructor helps you get the sound you are after, so the room usually ends up covering a wide spread.
Music Production for Songwriters is aimed at recording and producing songs you have written, with live instruments and vocals in the mix. EDM Production is aimed at building an electronic track from scratch in the box: drum programming, synth sound design and arrangement. Plenty of students take both.
The fall course meets Wednesdays for 8 weeks, starting October 14 and finishing December 9, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at our studio at 33 West St, Floor 5, in Downtown Boston. There is no class the week of Thanksgiving.
The 8 week course is $399 for active members and $599 for everyone else. You do not need to be a member to enroll.
At our studio at 33 West Street in Downtown Crossing, Boston, steps from the Red and Orange Lines at Downtown Crossing station, the Green Line at Park Street, and the Blue Line at State. Members commute from Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, and every downtown neighborhood.
Yes. Musicians Playground is an adults-only studio, so your cohort will be adults building their first tracks alongside you: professionals, retirees, and people coming back to music after years away.
